Rooms opening out towards the sea

Summer house Sandby in Österlen, Sweden by Johan Sundberg Arkitektur

Echoing the local vernacular, but with a timber frame and a roof and façades clad in wood, this summer house in Österlen sits comfortably in its surroundings on the edge of the protective pine forest, with the sandy beach as its nearest neighbour and playground.

The façades are clad in vertical boards with a custom profile, and the steeply pitched roof is clad in overlapping weatherboard. Like the decking and the pergola, they are made from Siberian larch that has been treated with a silicon wood preserver. All the rooms on the upper floor have rooflights. The generous windows on the ground floor let light flood in, while sliding doors allow the rooms to be fully opened up onto the wooden deck and garden outside.

The house was awarded Simrishamn Municipality’s architecture prize, in part for the “high-quality design, with its stylishly considered and expressively visual wooden architecture in superb harmony with the character of the coastal location.” The building was completed last year.
