Shelter for mountain goats

Overnight shelter in Skuta, Slovenien by OFIS

WITH SNOWSTORMS, ROUGH terrain and radical shifts in temperature, the weather at the top of Skuta, Slovenia’s highest mountain and a source of national pride poses a challenge for any architect. Three students at Harvard University Graduate School of Design were asked to design an overnight shelter below the peak of the mountain following a course led by the Slovenian architectural practice OFIS.

The structure comprises a supporting steel frame filled in with timber studs and insulation and clad externally in thin glassfibre-reinforced concrete panels. The interior is lined with solid pine and the same wood is used for the simple furniture, including bunks. The surrounds separating the windows from the concrete roof are also clad in untreated pine. The building was constructed in three sections, which were lifted into place with the generous help of a team from the Mountain Rescue Service and the Slovenian Armed Forces – who flew all the parts to the construction site by helicopter.«
